Mid summer and the travel desire has probably hit its peek in the studio. With travel instagram feeds and bloggers entising us of all these lovely spots around Europe we are eager to escape the heatwave and hit a nice city – for a nice dining experience. In fact this whole escaping to some cities will happen but in September as we are heading up to Scandinavia for some much needed inspiration.

So for number three of our Places To Eat & Drink column we will add yet again a spectacular simplistic restaurant designed by talented Joanna Laajisto. Without becoming mundane or somewhat stalking this design studio – this Finish based designer and design team truly knows how to get their hands on some exciting projects. They have once more satisfied our design appetite with the Caviar restaurant.

Happy indulging!

The Finlandia Caviar is a project set up by quality seafood company, Savu-Kari whose concept was to set up a caviar and oyster resturant right on the waterfront market in Helsinki. This specific area is known for its history, outdoor markets and waterfront.

The whole idea of this space was for the interior design and concept to keep a very Scandinavian feel which does not take too much away from the historical setting and building it is located in. Joanna Laajistos creative design studio enforced this idea by implementing a very subtle color palette together with soft shapes. The sourcing of material and products were done locally something which adds to the whole – keep it simple, lets stay local kind of feel.

According to The Coolhunters article about this interior space this restaurant is built around a space no larger than 45 square meters. The difficulties of a small space like this is making it functional and not over crowding the space. This is especially important if one wish to create a space where people can stay awhile while enjoying small bites of oysters or caviar along some wine or vodka.

Since Helsinki is on our list to visit in September we hope to be able to locate this shop and at least make a visit. Who knows maybe for some bites if not simply for a visual bite of it.

The color scheme of subdued greys, creams and hints of blue is inspired by the Finnish winter landscape; though with the use of natural wood and lighting, the place manages to be warm and inviting. – Joanna Laajisto
