Creative Office: Office Herengracht Designed by i29

i29 | Design Studio 210

i29 is one of those design studios that I very often look for inspiration from. They are a conceptual studio which I feel tend to focus on applying few selected materials but which always make a big impact in one way or other. Like in this space they designed, the colours and shapes creates a dramatic look while the simple patterns and textures calms the space down; a balance with a rather fancy result. Ok I will stop here, and instead please read the awesome write-up from office designer, Victoria.

While many of the offices I’ve covered on Design Studio 210 have belonged to creative agencies, there are just as many unique workspaces in more corporate sectors like banking and investments. Take Office Herengracht, an investment group in capital stock. They wanted a self-proclaimed “power office” that made them stand heads above the competition and really reflected their success. With this in mind, they enlisted the help of not one, but two architecture companies.

In a collaboration between i29 Architects and Eckhardt & Leeuwenstein Architects, the office was transformed into a series of boardrooms, lounge areas and working areas that “place every board member in the spotlight in a playful way.” The architects succeeded, with strategically placed oversized lamps illuminating each workspace and lounge chair. What I really love, however, is the whole atmosphere of money and power. Firstly, the office itself is situated in a historic 17th century building on one of the most famous canals in Amsterdam, de Gouden Bocht. This already evokes a richness and a sense of grandeur before you even get a look inside.

Then there’s the interior. It’s decorated throughout in three of the most luxurious colours in office design – black, gold and white. Then if that isn’t opulent enough, the playful oval shelving and circular lampshades lined with gold paint look purposefully like gold coins. Even the boardroom desk looks like it’s been constructed from bars of gold! It’s a classic piece of great office branding, illustrating their part in the investment and stock trading sector and letting clients and visitors know they’ve come to the right business. It even continues through to less formal office areas.

While the sense of power here is a little more muted, the use of black and white still communicates luxury and is something I often see at the headquarters of high fashion houses. Making the room appear bright and airy while at the same time textured with black shadow, it’s an imposing yet successful room. There are even wall sculptures and white marble floors that make the space seem more like a museum or ancient Greek temple!

I call the space “imposing” in the most positive way though – it’s sure to seep into the mood of employees to make them want to work harder and maintain this reputation of success. This need for hard work is also made easier by the long and interconnected seating. It’s great for co-working and collaboration as well as socialising!

I think this is the perfect office for a company in the investment sector. Exuding wealth and success without any arrogance, the strategic and adventurous design completely encapsulates their company ethos. What do you think?

Creative Office: Real Estate Company Vasakronan In Stockholm

Vasakronan Photo Jason Strong | Design Studio 210

The offices of businesses like real estate agents are traditionally seen as following the same design style, wherever in the world they might be located. However, there’s one real estate agent in Stockholm who are breaking the mould with a truly creative office design envisioned by forward thinking architects BSK Arkitekter.

Their name is Vasakronan and they’re a real estate company with a difference, not just specialising in retail and office spaces but focusing on doing their bit for the environment. They’re proud to be a carbon neutral company who are ISO 14001 certified, and Sweden’s first ever property company to offer green leases and green offices.

The whole of the Vasakronan office is decorated using bright and vibrant colours. Their signature shade of yellow crops up across the whole building; adorning chairs, lamps, boardroom walls and the partitions of breakout areas to reinforce the company’s branding and provide an identifying factor to visitors. Yellow is also a colour that’s been known to help increase our creativity, which is why it makes sense for Vasakronan to concentrate the shade around these essential work areas.

This tactical mind set continues in the rest of the office design, with exciting and energetic reds and oranges brightening up the ping pong area and collaborative working areas, and more relaxing blues and purples helping to create a serene atmosphere in the chill out areas.

The most important and impressive theme that runs through Vasakronan’s office design however, is the theme of the natural world. After all, it’s only right that a company dedicated to doing their bit for climate change illustrates it through their office design.

Wild looking plants, bushes and small trees surround tables and break out areas and line the office walls, while brown wicker chairs line the desks and plant pots hang in place of lampshades. The whole place is like a kind of indoor garden, motivating employees with a taste of the outside world (plants have long been thought to help increase staff productivity due to the life and vitality they inject into an office).

The office of Vasakronan is a great lesson in how to brand your headquarters. It doesn’t have to be done using a full on design that’s overrun with company logos and branded stationary, it can be achieved by simply reflecting your working practices through things like office colours and accessories.

Then there’s the fact that it just looks so inspirational. Coupled with a white colour palette that reflects and enhances the light we need to lift our spirits and stop us feeling gloomy, this creative office design helps create a workspace that everyone will look forward to walking into, whether they’re a client or a member of staff.

What do you think of Vasakronan’s nature inspired office design? Would you like to work there?

Creative Office: Headquarters Of Sweco In Stockholm

Sweco Office | Design Studio 210

If there’s one company that knows its office should act as a portfolio as well as a place of work, it’s Swedish design and engineering firm Sweco. With a head office based in beautiful Stockholm, Sweco offer architecture, structural engineering, building service systems and project management services that all encapsulate a commitment to long-term economic, ecological and social sustainability.

Sweco Office | Design Studio 210 Sweco Office | Design Studio 210

From the very first glance it’s clear to see this is a talented company who practice what they preach, incorporating their beliefs and methodology into an office design that was created by their very own architects! The first thing that strikes me is Sweco’s fantastic use of colour. Boardrooms and meeting rooms are tactically decorated to elicit just the right emotions for a successful meeting, whether that’s calm and tranquillity (green) or enthusiasm and excitement (red).

Even the blue and mulberry coloured dining and chill out areas have been carefully considered in order to keep staff happy, productive and stress-free. Sweco don’t let this rainbow colour palette take over their office design though. Rather than the entire space being one big exercise in colour blocking, these splashes of colour are used as an accent alongside a predominately white building, brightening up what could have been just another generic office.

Sweco Office | Design Studio 210 Sweco Office | Design Studio 210

This extra edge doesn’t stop at the colour palette either. Sweco also incorporates plenty of glass into their office design to not just prove that sustainability can be trendy, but to maximise the circulation of refreshing natural light. Not only does this make the whole space seem infinitely bigger, but provides continuity between rooms while holding onto an element of privacy that a completely open plan space would eliminate. Did you notice the wall art as well? Geometric shapes flow fluidly from the walls to the glass and add to the clean and natural atmosphere. Depending on how you look at them, they almost look like stones, tree branches or even a dinosaur’s skeleton!

This feeling of naturalness and, well, sustainability is further echoed through natural wood grain stairs that break up the floating white stairwell. This whole area looks like something out of a film, giving an impression of weightlessness that’s sure to inspire the architects who work around it.

Sweco have succeeded where many companies fail, using their office design as a means to showcase what they can do for clients while illustrating how seriously they take their approach to sustainability. The whole building seems clean, vibrant and healthy, and is a great lesson in the creative possibilities that lie in architecture. What do you think of Sweco’s Stockholm headquarters? Do you have a favourite feature?

Creative Office: Club Workspace At Barley Mow Designed By Tilt

TILT

If there’s one space that’s going to be full of stunning architectural and design choices, it’s one that’s used by a group of creatives and freelancers! One in particular is the London based Club Workspace at Barley Mow, a beautiful co-working venue that was designed by forward thinking architects TILT. As designers of creative spaces that promote collaborative working, they were the perfect choice where creating a truly motivational workspace that helped boost productivity and appealed to freelancers, start-up entrepreneurs and nomadic workers was concerned.

TILT

TILT has a talent for combining an array of up to date interior design trends without them looking over the top. Instead, they populated this Club Workspace with exposed metal beams, minimal white walls, natural wooden desks and lights that resemble elegant Chinese lanterns. All of these things are wonderful to look at when you need a bit of group motivation and work together to create a serene space that piques creativity. TILT also practices what they preach in their office furniture, and for good reason. Co-working can be difficult enough without trying to concentrate at an uncomfortable or badly designed desk that’s either too overcrowded or too sparse, making it harder to communicate with the rest of your group. As a result they’ve designed a range of desks that take co-working as their main consideration, and are one of my favourite elements of this office design!

TILTTILT
TILT

First there are the brown, interconnected LeafDesks. They can pivot through 270 degrees to create unique working layouts, which make them the perfect solution where co-working is concerned. They can be moved around to accommodate more or less people in a layout that works for them to avoid overcrowding or, indeed, undercrowding. Then there are the white Fruit n Nut Tables. While they might appear to come in a mish mash of shapes and sizes they’re actually strategically engineered to not just resemble things like monkey nuts, lemons and plums, but provide a flexible desking solution that can be used in both formal and informal environments, from brainstorming sessions to company meetings.

TILT have left no stone unturned when it comes to their office design for this Club Workspace. Even the dining area incorporates a cool monochrome colour palette offset with bright, low-set ceiling lights and minimal stools, adding to a beautiful mix of spaces that allow everyone occupying the building to drift through its rooms and find the area that best matches their current work state. Every element screams creativity without overpowering the minds of those working around them, creating the perfect collaborative working environment.

What do you think of this original and creative take on a co-working space? Let me know below!

Creative Office: Inoui A Former Interior Design Office

Interior Design Office

Today I am excited to announce that Design Studio 210 has its first contributor. Her name is Victoria Crawcour a graduate from Liverpool John Moores University with a degree in Interior Design. She works for a well-known office design company in UK where she spends her days designing creative offices. Lets welcome Victoria and hopefully you will find her writing as inspiring as me.

The most carefully considered office designs are always the most inspirational, as you can see in the beautiful headquarters of Inoui! A design studio created by the former Inoui duo themselves, Kyla and Amber now run separate studios (Kyla at Kyla Bidgood Interior Design and Amber at Mak Interiors).

The space offers a fantastic lesson in how to pair a minimal colour palette and layout with striking focal points, as illustrated in these fantastic photographs by Jen Steele. It’s no surprise that this project received a Silver Award of Design Excellence at the 2011 Interior Designers of Canada Shine Awards!

White brick walls and neutral storage solutions are offset by stunning accessories that don’t just pop with colour but marry beauty and functionality perfectly, which is one of the reasons this office is so striking. It effortlessly takes inspiration from a range of styles, pairing fun and vibrant desk chairs with more industrial, abstract metal lampshades and filament bulbs to create a space that screams creativity. Even the toilets are decorated with interesting pieces of wall art and colourful glass lampshades!

But perhaps the most impressive element of this workspace is the inspiration from designers and craftsmen of old. A towering yet elegant bookcase houses a range of publications that staff can turn to when creativity runs low, while in front of it lies a gorgeous table made from salvaged wood and flanked on all sides by bright, 70’s inspired chairs that add cheery energy to the room. Then there are the ingenious stairs. A truly unique design, they’re adorned with vintage joiners rulers that, when you take into consideration the old printed floor plans that decorate the walls, give you a real insight into the ethos and heritage inspiration running through this great space.
