Welcome to Casa Ellul – a boutique hotel who had visitors like super star and style icon Meghan Markle from Suits and The Tig. Casa Ellul is a family run boutique hotel located in the historical capital of Malta, called Valletta. The same capital has been voted to become the European Capital of 2018, which of course makes us curios about its culture and environment. For any one who might not know where Valletta is, this is the capital of a small island in the south of Mediterranean. Rich of culture and history, combine this with the surrounding sea and you have – Valletta.
Since we are a driving distance away from this Boutique hotel, we can’t really say that it is on our bucket list for places to travel to, but more the perfect place for a weekend or mid-week break. This especially now when the days are getting a bit cooler and there is that breeze to help us to explore the city by foot. Imagine waking up in the hotel, having breakfast on the boutique hotel’s roof terrace and then heading out to the city to explore what it has to offer – all we can say is, yes please!
Casa Ellul – Valletta’s Design Boutique Hotel
Enough of our dreaming here – let’s look a bit closer at Casa Ellul. The hotel is run by Matthew and Andrew Ellul. Two brothers who wished to continue the story of their grandparents home by turning it in to a boutique hotel. Not just any simple hotel – but they wanted a well designed hotel where one can relax and feel the family feel that they are all about.
In converting our family home, we have sought to remain true to timeless standards whilst restoring the property’s previous glory without compromising over supreme comforts. Casa Ellul is set against a backdrop of exquisite craftsmanship and architecture which compliment it and have made it a truly unique experience for all those who want to discover the ‘City Life’. – Casa Ellul
Casa Ellul´s Design Concept & Story
The building of Casa Ellul has been in their family for a long time. Already in the year of 1837 an ancestor of them purchased the place and it has after that gone through different generations in the family. The four walls and the soul of the building is clearly very meaningful to them and this is felt through the vibe of the whole hotel concept – all from the website, the interior design and the way they approach their customers. Casa Ellul is all about that history, family and timeless design.
From a design aspect the space is – wow -. Different types of textures, colors and materials are combined in a very cohesive way. The designers made sure to design an interior where contemporary details meet the traditional Maltese details such as the Maltese patterned tiles and the typical Maltese style balcony.
Common to other boutique hotels, different suites were designed to give the visitor almost a chance to experience different type of moods if visiting more than one time. For someone like us – it would create a bit of a difficult decision which suite to wish to stay in. We would probably go for suit 3, where the Mediterranean and fresh type of style gives us a relaxing feel. Or maybe suite 8, which has a more industrial kind of soft feel which blends in so well with the city whose working history is long.
To end this Places To Sleep highlight, if interested in visiting Valletta, check out Casa Elluls website, it has a nice write up about the history of Valletta. All we have left to say is well done Casa Ellul and when can we come over to see more?

Maltese characteristics such as the exquisitely coved vestibule, the colonnaded fireplace in the sala nobile, the concertina doors and Maltese patterned tiles all add to the finery of the house. Mythology and allegory have also found their place in this hotel. At the climb of the staircase on the piano nobile lives the ‘Tork’, a talisman of sorts, which is a familiar face in many Maltese houses.. Casa Ellul’s sits contently on a dolphin whilst showing off a cornucopia overflowing with fruit and flowers. It is, however, in the courtyard where the centrepiece of the whole house can be found.
