Creative Office: Office Herengracht Designed by i29

i29 | Design Studio 210

i29 is one of those design studios that I very often look for inspiration from. They are a conceptual studio which I feel tend to focus on applying few selected materials but which always make a big impact in one way or other. Like in this space they designed, the colours and shapes creates a dramatic look while the simple patterns and textures calms the space down; a balance with a rather fancy result. Ok I will stop here, and instead please read the awesome write-up from office designer, Victoria.

While many of the offices I’ve covered on Design Studio 210 have belonged to creative agencies, there are just as many unique workspaces in more corporate sectors like banking and investments. Take Office Herengracht, an investment group in capital stock. They wanted a self-proclaimed “power office” that made them stand heads above the competition and really reflected their success. With this in mind, they enlisted the help of not one, but two architecture companies.

In a collaboration between i29 Architects and Eckhardt & Leeuwenstein Architects, the office was transformed into a series of boardrooms, lounge areas and working areas that “place every board member in the spotlight in a playful way.” The architects succeeded, with strategically placed oversized lamps illuminating each workspace and lounge chair. What I really love, however, is the whole atmosphere of money and power. Firstly, the office itself is situated in a historic 17th century building on one of the most famous canals in Amsterdam, de Gouden Bocht. This already evokes a richness and a sense of grandeur before you even get a look inside.

Then there’s the interior. It’s decorated throughout in three of the most luxurious colours in office design – black, gold and white. Then if that isn’t opulent enough, the playful oval shelving and circular lampshades lined with gold paint look purposefully like gold coins. Even the boardroom desk looks like it’s been constructed from bars of gold! It’s a classic piece of great office branding, illustrating their part in the investment and stock trading sector and letting clients and visitors know they’ve come to the right business. It even continues through to less formal office areas.

While the sense of power here is a little more muted, the use of black and white still communicates luxury and is something I often see at the headquarters of high fashion houses. Making the room appear bright and airy while at the same time textured with black shadow, it’s an imposing yet successful room. There are even wall sculptures and white marble floors that make the space seem more like a museum or ancient Greek temple!

I call the space “imposing” in the most positive way though – it’s sure to seep into the mood of employees to make them want to work harder and maintain this reputation of success. This need for hard work is also made easier by the long and interconnected seating. It’s great for co-working and collaboration as well as socialising!

I think this is the perfect office for a company in the investment sector. Exuding wealth and success without any arrogance, the strategic and adventurous design completely encapsulates their company ethos. What do you think?

Creative Office: Consult Company Netlight Designed By Mer

Netlight / Photo - Jason Strong | Design Studio 210

Do you recall last weeks creative office; Locomotiv designed by Stockholm based, MER? It is a fantastic space that I can not take my eyes of. The same design studio has decorated this space; the office of a consult company called Netlight. I could not resist but to add this to our creative office column. I mean how fabulous isn’t the herringbone flooring oh and did you see the horse?! Have a look below what my interior design friend Victoria thinks about it.

One of the things I love about office design is how creative you can afford to be, especially when it comes to incorporating your branding in new and unique ways. One of the companies who do this to fantastic effect themselves is IT management and consulting company Netlight.

Netlight are a genuine consulting firm who thrive on gaining results for their clients. As a result, they’ve acquired offices in Stockholm, Oslo, Munich and London, and had leading design firm MER decorate them in a really creative way.

What I love most about MER’s design is the mish-mash of themes. A looming baroque centrepiece sits atop a collection of opulent rugs, while modern contemporary chairs and a floating, cloudlike light form a stark contrast. It’s stark in the very best way though, illustrating how creative and forward thinking Netlight are as a company. They even have a company horse carrying their business colours and a branded saddle blanket!

This purple theme also continues in Netlight’s beautiful boardrooms and meeting rooms. As well as further cementing their branding, the colour purple is associated with creativity, quality and truth. It’s the perfect colour for this kind of company and environment! The further you delve into this creative office, the more great little touches you find. Corridors made up of sheer white curtains reflect the light to really brighten up the space, and even boast glowing arrows to guide visitors around the premises.

Once you reach the dining and chill out areas of the Netlight office, it really opens out. Bright, refreshing light bounces around the room to make it appear even more open, while simple wooden desks, geometric counter tops and a natural wood floor add a really arty touch. When it comes to incorporating company branding into an office, Netlight are one of the best. They’ve managed to mix a variety of different design trends to really encapsulate what they’re about and show they have a fun side. This is essential for modern businesses who want to identify with not just their clients, but their employees too. What’s your favourite part of the Netlight office?

Creative Office: Advertising Agency Locomotiv

Locomotiv | Design Studio 210

As you can see from my previous creative office post, the Swedes certainly know how to craft an inspirational office design! Today’s work space is no different, and comes from Swedish advertising agency Locomotiv. Based in beautiful Stockholm and designed by the very talented team at architecture and consulting firm MER, the headquarters of Locomotiv are a clean, crisp example of how to really nail impactful yet minimal office design.

Locomotiv | Design Studio 210 Locomotiv | Design Studio 210 Locomotv | Design Studio210

What could otherwise have been just another white office is transformed with industrial elements that make the space seem like it’s been built into an old factory. Carefully hewn circles in the building’s roof act like stylish skylights to allow as much healthy, natural light as possible to permeate the space, cutting down on the need for artificial lighting and desk lamps. Then there are the gorgeous stairs flanked by mesh barriers – a really creative take on a staircase that opens up the office and provides an interesting focal point. But there are plenty of little details that work together to subtly liven up the Locomotiv headquarters too…

Locomotiv | Design Studio 210 Locomotiv | Design Studio 210 Locomotiv | Design Studio 210

While you could blink and miss decorative elements like the blackboard and little white typewriter, other additions like the colourful range of books, cool metal chairs and scribbles on the glass walls of the music room all work together to create a really quirky, fun place to work. It’s not every day you have the chance to tinkle the ivories on your lunch break!

The Locomotiv office is all about turning even the smallest elements into unique office features that make their workspace stand out, without being as full on or incorporating quite the same intense ‘fun factor’ as somewhere like Google. Even Locomotiv’s boardrooms, meeting rooms and the music room are given an extra edge with tactfully implemented colour palettes of tranquil blue, relaxing green, enthusiastic red and creative yellow.

One thing’s for sure – the Locomotiv office is the perfect place for a creative advertising team to work. Inspirational and one of a kind, this design is sure to feed into employees’ creative processes and ideas as well as show visitors and clients what kind of stellar work the company strives to achieve. What do you think of the Locomotiv headquarters? Would you like to work there?

Creative Office: Real Estate Company Vasakronan In Stockholm

Vasakronan Photo Jason Strong | Design Studio 210

The offices of businesses like real estate agents are traditionally seen as following the same design style, wherever in the world they might be located. However, there’s one real estate agent in Stockholm who are breaking the mould with a truly creative office design envisioned by forward thinking architects BSK Arkitekter.

Their name is Vasakronan and they’re a real estate company with a difference, not just specialising in retail and office spaces but focusing on doing their bit for the environment. They’re proud to be a carbon neutral company who are ISO 14001 certified, and Sweden’s first ever property company to offer green leases and green offices.

The whole of the Vasakronan office is decorated using bright and vibrant colours. Their signature shade of yellow crops up across the whole building; adorning chairs, lamps, boardroom walls and the partitions of breakout areas to reinforce the company’s branding and provide an identifying factor to visitors. Yellow is also a colour that’s been known to help increase our creativity, which is why it makes sense for Vasakronan to concentrate the shade around these essential work areas.

This tactical mind set continues in the rest of the office design, with exciting and energetic reds and oranges brightening up the ping pong area and collaborative working areas, and more relaxing blues and purples helping to create a serene atmosphere in the chill out areas.

The most important and impressive theme that runs through Vasakronan’s office design however, is the theme of the natural world. After all, it’s only right that a company dedicated to doing their bit for climate change illustrates it through their office design.

Wild looking plants, bushes and small trees surround tables and break out areas and line the office walls, while brown wicker chairs line the desks and plant pots hang in place of lampshades. The whole place is like a kind of indoor garden, motivating employees with a taste of the outside world (plants have long been thought to help increase staff productivity due to the life and vitality they inject into an office).

The office of Vasakronan is a great lesson in how to brand your headquarters. It doesn’t have to be done using a full on design that’s overrun with company logos and branded stationary, it can be achieved by simply reflecting your working practices through things like office colours and accessories.

Then there’s the fact that it just looks so inspirational. Coupled with a white colour palette that reflects and enhances the light we need to lift our spirits and stop us feeling gloomy, this creative office design helps create a workspace that everyone will look forward to walking into, whether they’re a client or a member of staff.

What do you think of Vasakronan’s nature inspired office design? Would you like to work there?

Creative Office: Branding Agency Squad Ink

SquadInk | Design Studio 210

It’s no surprise that the most creative offices come from, well, creatives! And the headquarters of creative branding agency Squad Ink is no exception. Created by the talented interior designers at Arent & Pyke, the newly purchased studio in Potts Point, Sydney provides a really inspirational place for the Squad Ink team to let their creative side run wild.

SquadInk | Design Studio 210 SquadInk | Design Studio 210

The whole space has been tailored towards the company’s belief in quirky, colourful and unique design, giving visitors a taste of what Squad Ink strive to achieve before they’ve even taken a look at their portfolio. Just take a look at the orange bookcase and red and yellow stools – they’re the perfect office colours for piquing enthusiasm and encouraging creativity.

This office isn’t just designed with visitors in mind though; it’s also a great source of inspiration for those working inside. Eclectic furniture, walls adorned with eye catching artwork and the refreshing natural light pouring through huge windows all breathe life and freshness into every corner of the workspace.

SquadInk | Design Studio 210
SquadInk | Design Studio 210

The bright and airy boardroom is a great example. Full of, again, natural light complimented by a combination of bright yet natural looking furniture, even these crisp images convey what a stress- free environment this must be – prefect for meetings that require a really clear head. The clean lines and natural wood of the minimalistic Eames table provide the perfect blank canvas for the more dramatic furnishings around it. ‘Mondrian Blue’ bentwood chairs from Thonet , an impactful black Tolomeo floor lamp and an eye catching piece of artwork add a real atmosphere of fun and enthusiasm to the space, striking the perfect balance between serenity and vibrancy.

The quirky furniture doesn’t stop there either, in the main office area you can find an Eames LCW chair, a Prismatic table by Isamu Noguchi and a potted Strelitzia. It’s a simple statement that draws on the natural vitality of the rest of the space with elements that look as if they’ve been plucked straight from the outdoors, while still making a big impact.

It’s clear to see where creative directors Matthew and Terry Squadrito find their greatest sources of inspiration. Geometric patterns and pops of colour can be seen throughout the office, whether in their choice of furniture or the ‘Laser Eyes’ artwork in the boardroom, an original screen print from FriendsWithYou that was the twins’ very first art purchase for the business. Even the offices pinboard is decorated with not just day to day posters and notices, but graphics that fall in line with the business’s own design ethos. It’s enough to make anyone want to work there! But what do you think? What’s your favourite part of Squad Ink’s office?
